Home Renovation Tips
A security system is hopefully something you want to consider, or install, prior to an actual need.

Most companies today install the system, and then you own it. If you are switching from one vendor to another, they usually can convert the existing system. There is sometimes a setup fee for this option. If you choose to switch vendors in the middle of a contract period, the new vendor may allow for a contractual obligation; they buy out your existing contract to free you to choose a new vendor.

If switching vendors, now would be a good time to add on new features. Some vendors allow you to custom-design your own system. Choices can include things like, motion detection vs. glass breakage detection, a pet motion feature, fire detection, and remote control options.
Wireless vs. wiring? Wireless is used where wiring is not an option, such as a multi-story house that was not pre-wired and was built on a slab. Do you want lights on automatically? This option can be added to many systems. The newer the system, the more likely the option can be added.

Prices range from $99 to $349, but can go up to thousands of dollars, depending on the size of the house, the number of windows and doors, the number of contacts, fire protection, etc. Most systems will include a power failure feature with a battery backup, and may include a radio backup monitor in case the phone lines are down or cut.

Contract periods are usually for 1, 2 or 3-year periods. Some vendors will do no contracts, but prices can go up at any time. This option allows the vendor to raise prices at any time. Ask for, and expect to receive, guaranteed response times as part of the contract. Also ask for deductible re-imbursements in case of actual burglary. False alarms are sometimes free, but the city or county can fine a homeowner for repeated false alarms within a certain period of time.

Make sure the vendor is using a UL-listed monitoring center that is inspected and licensed by UL. Check with the BBB for details on the company. And always ask for references.

An excellent choice for a home security system would come from Ackerman Security, based and monitored in Atlanta. Please call Chris Bean at 770.798.8376 for more infomation or to get a personal and professional quote.
